Born Mary Jane Beltzhoover, d/o Daniel Beltzhoover and Lizzie Miles. Her father was a West Point graduate of 1847, and would see service in the Civil War as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Regiment of Louisiana Heavy Artillery. Sister entered the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Emmitsburg, Maryland, July 16, 1887, ten months after her older sister Sarah, who took the name Sister Agatha. Sister Berchmans was missioned to schools in Virginia, and Alabama, as well as hospitals in Georgia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina.
