Hank was the oldest child of David Quiller Hanes and his wife, Nancy "Nelle" Catherine Moore. Hank served in the US Army during World War I with the Utilities Branch, Construction Division. He was a Chief Warrant Officer in the US Navy during World War II, serving 2 1/2 years in the Pacific Arena. He married Susan A. Thibedeau on June 19, 1918. They had four sons, all preceding them in death. Hank, his wife Sue and son Gordon all served in World War II. Hank was serving his third term as Mayor of Shell Lake, Wisconsin when he passed away.
Hank was my grandmother's older brother; his family are all gone and there are few left to pass his story on. He was courageous and proud, but the gentlest, kindest man you could ever know.
