Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Burnt Hills, Maryland, he graduated from West Point in 1874 and served as a 1st Lieutenant, in the 1st Infantry, US Army. Acting as Chief of Scouts, he saw service with hostile Apaches led by Geronimo at Sierra Madre Mountains, New Mexico. On January 11, 1886, as commander of Apache Scouts, he took part in the expedition into Mexico in pursuit of Geronimo and attacked his Apache band in a battle with Mexican troops. For distinguished gallantry in action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in November 1894 and later achieved the rank of Brigadier General.
