Lucy was the fifth child of Abram Martial Rich and Sarah "Sallie" Brittain Rich, both parents died young in Texas. Family members went to Texas to bring the young children home to Alabama. Lucy's siblings were Henry Jackson Rich (married Nancy "Rena" Burgess), James Wiley Rich (married Lena Mae Burgess and Bessie Mae Stephens) , Lizzie Dora Rich, Ida Frances Rich (married Hiram Franklin Allen), Jesse Alexander Rich (married Lee Smith) and Nora Belle Rich (married Loy Phillips.)

Lucy married McDuffie "Duff" Burgess, son of William James Lipscomb Burgess and Parthena E. Rich Burgess.
