SUCCUMBS TO OPERATION

MRS. BERG PASSED AWAY AT HOSPITAL LAST EVENING.

OPERATION WAS PERFORMED LAST THURSDAY.

And up to Noon Yesterday She was Not Considered in a Dangerous Condition — Resident of Anderson Many Years

Mrs. Martha V. Berg died at St. John's hospital shortly after 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Her death was due to an operation for tumor, which was performed last Thursday. The death came as a shock to the members of the family and the many friends as Mrs. Berg was believed to be getting along nicely and was thought to be practically out of danger. The operation was a delicate one. Mrs. Berg came out from under the influence of the anesthetics nicely and bore the shock well. She showed signs of improvement, and laughed with her friends. Sunday afternoon, signs of blood poisoning were noticed by the physicians but they did not take seriously to it. Shortly afternon [sic] yesterday that the decided change for the worse came and it was soon seen that death was but a question of a few hours. The members of the family were then called to the bedside.

Mrs. Berg's health began to fail about a year ago and during last winter, she was a constant sufferer. In the early spring she became practically so invalid and since that time she has been able to be up only a small part of the time. Several days before the operation it was seen that the only chace [sic] for her recovery was in the operation.

The Berg home is being remodeled and because of this fact the remains were removed to the home of the daughter of the deceased, Mrs. E. C. Carpenter at Thirteenth and Jefferson street, from where the funeral will occur. The date of the funeral has not been arranged, but it will not take place before Thursday. Elder Harkins, of the Central Christian church will have charge of the services and interment will be made at the Anderson cemetery.

Mrs. Berg was one of the best known ladies in Anderson. She was born at Roseburg, this state, and would have been 58 years of age in two weeks from today. When a child she moved to Dublin, this state and in 1866 was married to David N. Berg. They moved to this city in 1874 and with the exception of two years, which time they were at Indianapolis, they have lived in this city. The family home has always been at 329 West Twelfth street. Mr. Berg died Jan. 12, 1898, at Indianapolis, after being a sufferer for many years. He was at one time one of the best known educators of this part of Indiana and at one time county superintendent of schools.

Mrs. Berg leaves two children, Mrs. Grace Carpenter, wife of Ellis S. [sic] Carpenter and Herbert Berg, of the Bulletin reportorial force. One child, Ethel Berg, died in 1881. Aside from the children, Mrs. Berg leaves three sisters, Mrs. Knight of Kokomo, Mrs. Elliott, of Carthage, Mo., and Miss Retta Bowen. The latter came to Anderson with Mrs. Berg and has always lived with her. She is the oldest teacher in the Anderson schools.

Mrs. Berg was a member of the Christian church, having become connected with it in 1865. Since living in Anderson her membership has been in the Central Christian church. She was one of the devoted members and an active worker and while raising funds for the building of the church three years ago, she worked incessantly. She was always happy when doing something for the church or for some one in need of help.
