Alvin Tyler Conant was a Union soldier of the American Civil War. He enlisted on 8 November, 1862 as a Private and served until his death in 1863.

Alvin is son of Deacon Joseph Conant and Ruth Guilford of Rowley, and was born there. He is one of two brothers of Sarah (Conant) Guilford, (often misspelled as Guildford)wife of Alvin Tenney Guilford - both of whom are interred in the Rowley Burial Ground.

Alvin Tyler Conant was a shoemaker and farmer, and married Melinda Pingree on December 28, 1848 at Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. Melinda was born in Rowley on June 11, 1829, the daughter of Daniel Proctor Pingree and Sarah (Foster) Pingree.

In the 1860 US Census, he resided in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts with his wife.

The National Archives record shows that died (and was buried) on October 16, 1863, in Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina.

His death record which was filed in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts (his home) indicated his death date as October 16 and the recording date as October 26, and provides proof that he is, in fact, interred in Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina, and indicates cause of death as typhoid fever.

Beaufort National Cemetery
Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina, USA
Plot: Section 16, Site 1317

The memorial marker in the cemetery here is dated October 26, unfortunately. It is not uncommon that dates and names were incorrectly transcribed although he did, in fact, perish on October 16, but the person who made the headstone used the date from the Rowley record of death rather than the given death date.

Melinda did not remarry after Alvin's death, and continued to live in the area, and can be found in the Ipswich, Massachusetts Directory in 1891 as Alvin's widow residing at 26 High Street, occupation 'nurse,' and as late as 1912, where she is listed as widow of Alvin T. residing at 22 High Street. It is not known at this time where she is interred.

Alvin is referred to in the work 'Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the Civil War.' and the work entitled: Hurd, Duane Hamilton, ed. History of Essex County, Massachusetts, Volume 2, Part 1.
