Alvin Tyler Conant was a Union soldier of the American Civil War. He enlisted on 8 November, 1862 as a Private and served until his death in 1863.
Alvin is son of Deacon Joseph Conant and Ruth Guilford of Rowley, and was born there. He is one of two brothers of Sarah (Conant) Guilford, (often misspelled as Guildford)wife of Alvin Tenney Guilford - both of whom are interred in the Rowley Burial Ground.
Alvin Tyler Conant was a shoemaker and farmer, and married Melinda Pingree on December 28, 1848 at Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. Melinda was born in Rowley on June 11, 1829, the daughter of Daniel Proctor Pingree and Sarah (Foster) Pingree.
In the 1860 US Census, he resided in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts with his wife.
The National Archives record shows that died (and was buried) on October 16, 1863, in Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina.
His death record which was filed in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts (his home) indicated his death date as October 16 and the recording date as October 26, and provides proof that he is, in fact, interred in Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina, and indicates cause of death as typhoid fever.

It is not known at this time where she is interred.

Gravesite Details
gravestone states N.C., but was actually S.C.: It was occupied by the Union army in August 1863 and served as a supply depot and camp for the troops besieging Charleston. Folly Island stayed in Federal control for the rest of the war.
