British Revolutionary War Marine Officer. He was second in command of the expedition to find and destroy military stores hidden in Concord, Massachusetts, on April 18/19, 1775. This expedition met and exchanged fire with American militia at Lexington Green and later at the North Bridge in Concord, thus starting the American Revolution. At the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, he was fatally wounded while bravely leading the Marines on a charge to take the American redoubt. He was buried under Old North Church in Boston. After the war, his widow requested that his body be shipped back to London for burial. However, the wrong body was sent and so the Major remains below Old North Church.
