Mexican religious leader and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A native of Guadalajara, he studied first at the local Seminary, the at the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome. He was ordained, on February 25, 1912, and from that year to 1929, he did pastoral work in the archdiocese of Guadalajara in such functions as Faculty member of the Minor Seminary , prefect, and faculty member of the Major Seminary, official, canon, and chancellor of the archdiocesan curia. He was incarcerated during the religious persecution of 1926. On May 7, 1930, he was consecrated titular bishop of Roso and appointed auxiliary of Guadalajara. Four years later, he was promoted to titular archbishop of Bizia and appointed coadjutor of Guadalajara, with right of succession, precisely on December 22, 1934. Finally, he became archbishop of Guadalajara, on February 18, 1936. He served as President of the Mexican Episcopal Conference for six consecutive terms. Pope John XXIII created him cardinal, on December 15, 1958. He participated in the conclave of 1963. He resigned the pastoral government of his archdiocese, on March 1, 1969 and passed away three years later in his beloved episcopal city.
