"Brief Biography of Rev. Israel Archbold


Rev. Israel Archbold was born on Nov. 24, 1807 in Mt. Prosperous, Harrison County, VA (later Smithton and now Smithburg, Dodridge Co., W.VA). He was the eleventh child. is only formal schooling before he was 21 years old was for 3 months at age 11. On Jan. 7, 1829 he moved to the upper end of Washington County, OH and taught school there for 3 months. He then went on to Middlebourne, VA to attend school. He again taught and farmed for 2 years, and was licensed as an "exhorter" in the Methodist Church. In the fall of 1832 he went to Marietta, OH, to the Institute of Education, and also taught school there and in Portsmouth. He returned to Marietta in the spring of 1833 to attend Marietta College from which he was graduated in 1834.

He was licensed as a Methodist preacher on March 1, 1834 at Marietta to preach within the "Pittsburg Conference" (1834-1959). He was assigned to the following circuits: Barnesville (1834), McConnellsville (1835), Summerfield (1837), Newport (1839), Moorefield (1841), Leesburg (1843), Woodsfield, Pittsburg and Hanover (1857). He later became minister of the Methodist Church on Plymouth Street, Hanover (now Hanoverton), Columbiana County, OH.

On Sept. 25, 1834, he married Frances Foster Dana, daughter of Dea. William and Polly Parkman Foster Dana, in Newport, OH. He died on May 18, 1859 in Hanover and was buried in Woodlawn cemetery, Titusville, PA. His widow lived in Salem, OH, and died in Titusville, PA on July 22, 1886."
