Laverne Carter Oliver, 83, went home peacefully to be with her Lord Friday, March 5, 2010. She passed away in Chippenham Hospital three days after having a sudden heart attack. She had family with her when she passed.
Born Wilma Laverne Carter, she was a native of Georgia and the daughter of the late Luther and Lavada Carter of Portsmouth, Virginia. She moved with her family from Georgia to Portsmouth when she was thirteen. She grew up in Portsmouth, married and raised her family there. In 1972, she moved again with her husband and sons to Richmond. She was employed by The Retreat Hospital as an accounts payable clerk and retired after almost twenty years of service.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Robert Oliver and three sons, Bob Oliver of Jacksonville, N.C., Jerry Oliver and his wife Marybeth of Midlothian and Tim Oliver of Atlanta. In addition, she's survived by two grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Oliver.
She also leaves behind her younger sister, Mrs. Eleanor Thomas and her husband Robert E. Thomas of Jacksonville, Florida; several nieces and nephews; many devoted friends including longtime friends at Fairmount Christian Church in Mechanicsville where she was a member for many years.
