BETTENDORF — Michael Patrick Sherman, 32, of Bettendorf, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011.
Visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Runge Mortuary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m., Tuesday at St. Paul the Apostle Church, East Rusholme Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Memorial Park where Military Honors will be conducted by the Marine Honor Guard at 11:30 a.m.
Mike was born March 2, 1979, in Davenport, to Larry and Patty (Rosalie) Sherman. He married Sandra Grace Bullock in 2008 in Pensacola, Fla.
Michael served 13 years in the United States Marine Corps, retiring in 2011 as a Staff Sergeant. His first tour in Japan was followed by four deployments to the Middle East where he served in both the Afghanistan and Iraqi campaigns. These deployments also included humanitarian relief during the Indonesian tsunami and in Africa.
He was proudest of earning the Navy Presidential Unit Citation for "extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy." Additionally he was awarded the Air Medal seven times, the Navy Marine Corps Commendation, the Navy Marine Corps Achievement, and seven other medals. He was awarded five additional ribbons as well as his Air Combat Wings.
Michael was most loved for his quick wit and his undying loyalty to those he loved. He was a consummate Chicago Cubs fan, starting every season with high expectations for a World Series Championship, but ending each season "waiting for next year". He loved to fish and had been preparing this fall for his first bow hunting season.
In addition to his wife and parents, Michael is survived by his son Michael Patrick Sherman Jr.; brother, Lance (Jerilyn) Sherman, LeClaire; sister, Anne (Francis) Dunbar, Elgin, Il.; grandmother, Norma Schreiber; aunt, Sandra Schreiber; uncle, Larry (Marilyn) Schreiber; nieces and nephews, Logan and Ashten Sherman and Francis and Nora Dunbar; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Lawrence and Edna Sherman and Donald Schreiber.
