Original name: Phoebe Ann Mosey
[Add A Photo]
This info is taken from Tall Tales and the Truth. Annie Oakly was her stage name, Phoebe Anne Mosey was her birth name. Born August 13, 1860, 2 miles NW of Woodland, now Willowdell, near Brock, Drake Co, OH, to John and Susan Mosey. She was sent to the poorhouse after her fathers death of pneumonia. She was only 10 years old. Later, she was sent to an abusive foster family, where she ran away at age 12. She went back to live with her mother and 5 siblings. She shot game to support her family. There has been a long-standing conterverice about the spelling of her name. Many believe her name was Moses but after finding her Father's grave site, Bess Edwards has proved to all Historian that Annie was indeed a Mosey. In the 1860 Census, the family name was spelled Mauzy. In the 1870 Census, she was Ann Mosey. She used the Mozee spelling, but her Brother, John and sister, Hulda changed their names to Moses.
