College Football Coach. The son of Polish immigrants, he was raised in Milwaukee and played collegiate football at the University of Idaho. Knap's lengthy coaching career began in 1939 at the high school level, where he remained until 1959 when he rejoined the collegiate ranks on the staff at Utah State University. In 1962, he succeeded John Ralston as head coach at Utah State (1962 to 1966) and guided his teams to three winning seasons. After serving one year on the staff of the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League (1967), he served as head coach of Boise State and during his tenure there (1968 to 1975) led the Broncos to three Big Sky titles. He was the successor to Ron Meyer at UNLV and guided the Rebels to a 9 win 3 loss record and a NCAA Division II playoff berth in his first year there (1976). During his tenure at UNLV (1976 to 1981) many have regarded this era as one of the most successful in the school's history; Knap compiled a 47 win 20 loss 2 tie record. He was inducted into the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989.
