Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in London, England, he served as a Private in the 9th Lancers, British Army. On June 19, 1857, in actions at Delhi, India, Private Hancock with the help of another Private, saved an officer when his battery was blown up. When Private Hancock was severely wounded and his comrade’s horse was killed under him he remained by the officer. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Corporal and awarded the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace on June 8, 1859. He left the Army due to injuries and later died in Westminster, England.
