Mary Lee Buchanan Barron was reunited with her husband Robert (Bob) Barron at 7:30 p.m. on September 25, 2011. Born August 24, 1921, she was a life-long resident of Mitchell County and member of the Bakersville United Methodist Church spending most of her life in Bakersville with the past five years at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine. Bob and Mary Lee lived for brief periods in Miami and Detroit during WWII. Mary Lee was a graduate of Western Carolina University and began her teaching career in Mitchell County as a seventh grade teacher and started the library in the middle and elementary section of Bowman School. During summers she completed a Master's Degree in Library Science from Appalachian State University then worked in the Mitchell County Public Library as a cataloger and part time bookmobile librarian. She returned to the school system in the early 60's, coordinating library service in Ledger, Buladean, Glenn Ayre, and Gouge elementary and Bowman Middle schools. The family is proud to hear many people remark, "Mrs. Barron was my librarian." She loved the children and worked diligently to help them to appreciate their mountain culture by reading stories to them like Jack Tales and the work of John Parris.

She will reunite also with her parents, Lorenzo Buchanan and Euzelia Young Buchanan of the Rock Creek and Young Cove communities, who spent their married lives in a big white house in downtown Bakersville where Mary Lee and her son Daniel were born. Bob and Mary Lee have been separated by death for 25 years. She is survived by her son Daniel, Director of AMY Regional Library, and his wife Brette, an artist, both of Bakersville; a granddaughter, Amy Barron of Huntersville, a GIS Professional with Duke Energy in Charlotte; a step grandson, Bobby Day of Spruce Pine, an Electronics Technician with Euro-Pro; and a step granddaughter, Maddie Day of Bakersville a Senior at Mitchell High School.

Mary Lee will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her and appreciate all that she contributed to the lives of Mitchell County children and the community spirit of Bakersville. One of her favorite places was New Orleans, and as their bands play "When the Saints go Marching In," she and Bob will smile and say, "Laissez les bons temps rouler!" Instead of flowers, the family will appreciate donations in Mary Lee's behalf to the Mitchell County Public Library in Bakersville.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 3:00PM in Bakersville Methodist Church with David Lee officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Green Young Cemetery.
