I first saw Babetta running through the halls of my high school in The Dalles. She was a kitten at the time and had somehow gotten inside the building. I was aiding in the office that day and overheard that they were going to take her to the pound. Of course, I just could not let that happen so I told them I would take her. I gathered her up, grabbed my car keys (I was a Junior at the time) and drove up the hill to my house.
My parents were livid that I brought home a cat, but they never told me to get rid of her. Within hours my mom was attached and within days my dad, a cat hater, was seen petting the cat while it rested on his lap. From that point I knew she wasn't going anywhere.
Babetta's name did not come easy. I had a hard time picking. I took out a book of baby names and chose one that meant "mischievous". We called her Babby for short.
Babby was almost human in some of her actions. It's hard to explain, but at times she was not like a cat at all.
Babby died around 5pm on a Friday. She was hit by a car. Thinking back now, it was almost as if she had done it on purpose. I remember that day because my mother had gone to a movie with a friend and I had to break the news when she got back. I also had a hard time keeping my 2 year old from seeing her as I picked her up from the road & carried her home.
Babby was cremated the following Monday morning at a pet crematory in Hood River. We carried her little bag of ashes home & set them in the curio cabinet until the day came when we could spread her ashes over the hillside in The Dalles.
