NORFOLK - Helen Fitzpatrick Barnes, 88, of the 5000 block of Heathglen Circle, died April 8, 2010. Mrs. Barnes was born in Norfolk, the daughter of the late Farrell A. Fitzpatrick and Lillian Taylor Fitzpatrick.
Mrs. Barnes was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Virginia Beach. She was a very dedicated wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed her gardening and was a dedicated volunteer at DePaul Hospital for 28 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Frederick "Freddie" Barnes Sr.; and five sisters, Marion, Mildred, Lillian, Margaret, and her identical twin Doris.
Survivors include her daughters, Helen B. Sewell and her husband Buddy of Virginia Beach, Marion F. Barnes of Richmond; a son, James "Jimmy" Barnes Jr. and his wife Tammy of Currituck, N.C.; two grandchildren, Gary Sewell and his wife Brandie of Virginia Beach, and James F. Barnes III of Fort Campbell, Ky. Mrs. Barnes is also survived by two sisters, Vera Shaw of Norfolk and Barbara Coli of Culpeper, Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Courtney, Gary and Madeline.
A funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Christ the King Catholic Church by Father Brian Rafferty. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6 until 7:30 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601.
