Author. He was a noted Catalan writer of novels, poetry and plays. Catalan is a Spanish language spoken mainly in Valencia. At age 16, he published his first book, "Israel," before entering the University of Barcelona in 1930, studying law and history. After traveling about, he served in the Spanish Civil War. He received many honors throughout his career: Montaigne Prize in 1971, the Award of Honor of Catalan Letters in 1972, the Ignasi Iglesias Prize in 1980, and in 1982 the City of Barcelona Prize and the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. He is best remembered for his books "Laia," "Ariadna al Laberint Grotesc," "El Caminant i el Mur," "Ronda de mort a Sinera," and "La Pell de Brau." He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970 and 1971.
