MATTOON – Burnace "Gene" Carey, age 79, of Mattoon, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at his residence.

Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Dennis Kollross officiating. Interment will follow in Funeral Home with a Prayer Service at 7:45 p.m.

Mr. Carey was born March 12, 1925 at Iberia, Missouri, a son of Walter and Lectie Mae Fike Carey. He married Florence Grieshammer June 12, 1946 at Jefferson City, Missouri. He is survived by his wife, Florence, of Mattoon; four children, Joyce (Amos) Townley and Dennis (Theresa) Carey all of Mattoon, Terry (Vicki) Carey of Windsor and Kathy (Jerry) Weber of Gays. He also leaves a sister, Irene (Lloyd) Johnson of Jefferson City, Missouri; grandchildren, Mark Townley, Jamie (Carl) McDowell, Michael (Kathy) Carey, Dustin Carey, Destiny Carey, Alec Carey, Amber (Bob) O'Dell all of Mattoon, Shawn Carey and Renee Long of Windsor, Brianna Weber of Gays, Autumn (David) Nick of Lerna and Angela (Josh) Hernandez of Allenville. Seventeen great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandsons also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters, one granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter.

Gene was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, American Legion, life member of V.F.W. Post 4325, Eagles Club and Loyal Order of the Moose 803. He was employed by USI Chemical in Tuscola as an operator in PCR retiring in 1991 after 33 years service. He also owned and operated Carey's Antiques in Mattoon over 25 years. Gene was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
