Watrous Usher was born in East Haddam, Connecticut, to Hezekiah Usher and Lydia Baker Usher. The family moved to Brookfield, Madison, New York, with their 13 children. After marrying Welthy Morgan, daughter of Joshua Morgan and Welthy Palmer, also of Brookfield (formerly of Colchester, Connecticut),Watrous and Welthy moved to Olmsted, Cuyahoga, Ohio, to the Western Reserve, known as "New Connecticut." Watrous was a justice of the peace and councilman. He established one of the first mills on the Rocky River in Olmsted. He was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Cleveland for a 7 year term. He was the uncle of John Palmer Usher, Secretary of the Interior to Abraham Lincoln.
