MRS. J. BARTELS OF CLEVELAND IS THE VICTIM
Threw Carpet Over Smoking Kitchen Oil Stove Which Exploded, Ignited Clothes Mrs. John Bartels of Cleveland, a mother of three small children, was burned to death yesterday at the family home there when an oil stove which she had been using and which did not burn well, exploded, igniting her clothing.
Mrs. Bartels instead of attempting to extinguish the flames which were rapidly enveloping her form, rushed to the second floor of her home where her youngest child lay asleep. She was fearful that the house would burn down and thinking more of her babe than of herself, she carried the child to safety outside the house and then screamed to neighbors for aid. When the neighbors came she had been burned beyond all hope of recovery, every stitch of her clothing having been burned from her body, nothing but her shoes remaining on her feet. Neighbors found her lying on the ground, moaning in death agonies. She died at 5:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, a matter of four hours after the accident occurred.
Rug on Stove Tells Tale.
Mrs. Bartels, according to her husband who conducts the Manitowoc Storage Battery company on York street, had been using the kitchen oil stove which did not burn well. A rug which was found to have been thrown over the stove was mute evidence of what had occurred. Mrs. Bartels had turned the stove down as far as possible when it continued smoking. Then, to prevent the room from filling with kerosene fumes, she threw a rag carpet from the floor over the stove. The stove exploded at this juncture, the flames licking up from beneath the rug and igniting her clothing as she stood nearby.
Her husband stated today that he had left the home for his business in Manitowoc and that he presumed the stove exploded shortly after his leaving or at about 2 o'clock.
Sacrificed Self.
Mrs. Bartels was 35 years of age. Her tragic death came as a shock to the neighborhood. Her mother love which compelled her to sacrifice herself for the life of one of her children will live long in the memory of the community and will be told and retold to children as a shining example of a great and undying love in which the greatest sacrifice was unhesitatingly made.
Mrs. Bartels is survived by her husband and the three children, Violet, 12, Ruhle 8 and Elizabeth 4. It was Elizabeth whom the mother carried from the second floor where she was sleeping to safety outside the house. She is also survived by her sisters Mrs. Elizabeth Arahando, Abbotsford, Mrs. Lydia Tutloff, Curtis; Mrs. Thelma Culbertson, Greenleaf and Mrs. Alvina Siebert of Appleton, also one brother George of Abbotsford.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at Cleveland, the Rev. Springling to perform the last sad rites.
