NORMAL — Robert Bailey Davidson, 82, of Normal died Wednesday (Aug. 17, 2011) at his residence.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 2 followed by a lunch at Second Presbyterian Church, 313 N. East St., Bloomington. Military honors will be accorded by the Bloomington-Normal American Legion honor guard. An inurnment will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Bob would have appreciated a gift to his church to be used for youth programs.

Born March 17, 1929, in Memphis, Tenn., to George Alexander Davidson and Maude Eleanor Bailey Davidson. Robert Davidson was a loving husband, a caring father, a gentle grandfather and a retired combat veteran. He is fondly remembered as always being a gentleman and a gentle man.
Robert was a career Army man from 1947 to 1972, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4; a military man to his core. He believed in his country and the value of service to country. He was supportive of the men and women who serve to earn our freedom every day. He served throughout Europe and the United States, and completed two one-year tours in Vietnam and a one-year tour in Korea. As a testament to his dedication to God and country, in his final months, he said, "When God calls my number, I'll say ‘Yes, Sir. Here I am.'"
He received his bachelor of science in engineering from the University of Maryland in 1967 and his four young daughters attended the graduation ceremony … a proud moment for all of us.
Following Robert's retirement from the Army, his career turned to the state of Illinois, where he worked for the Department of Labor as a labor market analyst. He was instrumental in bringing the Mitsubishi automotive plant to Bloomington-Normal, serving on the committee that convinced the company to build here. With the success of the Mitsubishi plant, his influence continues to create jobs in the surrounding area and boost the economy.
Robert enjoyed being at home with his family and always put them first. He married the love of his life, Jacqueline Thiery on Sept. 25, 1957, in Saint-Dizier, France. Together, they lived all over the world to support his career and raised a beautiful family. He and Jacqueline supported all four daughters to earn their bachelor's degrees and create careers of their own, instilling a great work ethic in each of them. He led by example, with a commendable moral compass always. His family remains forever grateful for his influence in their lives.
Robert was an avid stamp collector since boyhood and loved collecting stamps from all over the world, as well as being a member of the Cornbelt Philatelic Society. He was a student of history and took pleasure in reading the stories of history and all genres of books. He enjoyed writing speeches and was an accomplished orator, which resulted in his being called upon to speak for the community on several occasions.
Robert Davidson is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jacqueline Thiery Davidson; as well as his four daughters and their families, Natacha and Phillip Nicholas of Kenosha, Wis.; Patricia and Dan Logsdon and grandson Drake, of Arlington, Texas; Edie and David Haney and grandchildren Victoria, Parker and Madeleine of Duluth, Ga.; and Frances Davidson and grandchildren William and Nicole of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by his brother, Alex Davidson; his sister-in-law, Renate; nephew, Marc; and niece Barbara, who live in Bonn, Germany. His memory lives on.
