Ruth Mabel Glasure was born on August 15, 1899 in Banks County, Georgia at her grandfather, Thomas Benjamin Bruce's home across the Hudson River from Hebron Church. She was the daughter of Myra Louise Bruce and Groves Cleveland Glasure. She was given the name Ruth because it was liked by her parents and Mabel came from her Aunt Dora Maybelle Bruce (Mrs. Charles C. Neal). Ruth spent all her growing up years in the Hebron Community. Ruth's education included her first years at the Old Hebron School with Miss Lila Neal (Mrs. Lee Johnson) as her first teacher. She then attended the New Hebron School built about 1910. From the seventh grade up she went to Commerce High School and Graduated in 1920. From 1920-23 she attended Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs, NC. where she majored in Home Economics. Ruth soon began teaching at schools across northeast Georgia including: Carlton, White Oak, Cleveland, Cataula, Sandy Cross, Airline, Ashland, Davis Academy, Jackson Trail, and Lavonia. At her retirement she had taught in the state of Georgia a total of twenty years. Ruth was a good school teacher and worked hard to get her students off to a good start in their education. Most of her later years she taught first grade and when they entered her classroom they came not from head start and play school, but from the cotton fields, red clay yards, and back woods of rural north Georgia.
