Dr. William L Abbott
March 10, 1923 - July 25, 2011

Dr. William L. Abbott, who was born March 10, 1923 in Geneva, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his home on July 25, 2011 at the age of 88. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Walter James Abbott and Ethel Barrett Abbott, a brother James Mack Abbott and a sister Aline Abbott Pridgen.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Christine Harrison Abbott, his daughter Gina Abbott (Tom) Horn, his son Walter L. (Barbara) Abbott, and his grandchildren whom he deeply adores, Lauren Abbott, Matthew Abbott, Bryant Horn and Camille Horn, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of Geneva High School, the University of Alabama and the Southern College of Optometry. After graduating from high school he served in the United States Army for three years and achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant at the time of his Honorable Discharge in 1949. While serving in the Army he was stationed for over two years in New Delhi, India. After being discharged from the Army he enrolled at the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. After his graduation from The University in 1950 he became a traveling representative for the fraternity, visiting most of their chapters nationwide.
In 1961 Dr. Abbott graduated from the Southern College of Optometry and located with his family to Panama City where he practiced Optometry for 35 years and was the first Optometrist in the city to fit patients with contact lenses. He retired from his Optometry practice in 1997, and continued his love of fishing, golf and attending football games at his beloved University of Alabama. He was generally considered as the most avid University of Alabama football fan in Panama City.
His many civic and community involvements include Past President of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, Past President of the local chapter of the University of Alabama Alumni Association, numerous positions in the Panama City Lions Club, member of Military Affairs, Vice Commodore and long-time member of the St. Andrew Bay Yacht Club, and member of the Board of Directors of Panama Country Club for over 35 years during which time he was a member of the "Bandits" golf group.
Dr. Abbott, or "Big Abb" to his friends, was always ready with a funny story and a great sense of humor. But of all of his life accomplishments, his greatest was being a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
The family would like to thank Dr. William Dent, his primary care physician and Tracy Whitfield of Emerald Coast Hospice for their loving and special care.
Asked to serve as honorary pallbearers are Mr. Henry Kracke, Mr. Clyde Mills, Mr. Marty Sheehan, and the "Bandits" golf group, including Mr. Bob Hurst, Mr. Bob Edwards, Mr. Luke Williams and Mr. Bill Dickens.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Panama City, 901 E. 4th Street, with visitation one hour prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. at the church. The Rev. Rudy Olivo and Brother Carl Fountain will conduct the services.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made to the First United Methodist Church of Panama City, Community Life Center or Emerald Coast Hospice.
