Nettie was the last of 7 children. She was described by family as being under 5 feet tall, and very petite. At 24 years old, she married George C. Smith, a man aged 41. After having 5 children together, George abandoned the family, and Nettie was forced to file for divorce in 1916. Her children were taken from her by the state as she was not able to care for them. In Jan 1919 she married Willard Hugh Montgomery. She was able at this time to get 4 of her children back, but one boy had been adopted out. The marriage did not last, and she filed for divorce in Aug 1919. In 1920, at age 41, she married a third time to a man much younger than her, Lloyd Leonard Murphy was only 22. Nettie remained married to Leon until her death. Nettie died quietly in her sleep from old age in the home of her granddaughter, Esther K. Hayes Goebl.
