"Henry C. Grote, esteemed and long-time resident of the community, succumbed on Friday, Sept. 19. Death was due to leukemia and followed a serious illness that had extended over the period of a month.
"The funeral was held Monday morning at 10 o'clock in the Assumption Church, of which he was a member. Msgr. John A. Fearon officiated at the rites. Music was by the senior choir.
"Interment was in Calvary cemetery. Casket bearers were George Leuthard, Mike McCarthy, J.W. Edwards, Harold Freeman, Henry Schmidt and Arthur LeSage, Sr.
"Those from away who attended the rites were Mrs. Lester Smith and son, LeRoy of Shevlin, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Hall of St. Paul, Henry Snyder, Leo Hermsen, Joe Hermsen and Mr. and Mrs. Andy Krupfl, all of Carroll, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Freeman and Patsy and Dale of Minneapolis, Miss Alberta Grote Of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Elmer Moore of Deerwood, Minn.
"Henry Christ Grote was born in Hanover, Germany, on Dec. 22, 1879, son of Bernard and Josephine Grote. In 1888 the family came to the United Sates. He was united in marriage to Mary Hermsen at Mt. Carmel, in Carroll county, Iowa, on April 19, 1904. In 1905 the couple came to Minnesota, settling at Norcross where they lived until 1914 when they came to Stevens county and engaged in farming in Framnas township. He continued to reside in Framnas until he retired from the farm in 1943 and moved to Morris.
"Left to mourn his death are his wife, two sons, Albert and Leo of Morris, two daughters, Olivia (Mrs. Lester Smith) of Shevlin, Minn. and Lillian (Mrs. E.A. Hall) of St. Paul. Another daughter, Cecelia, also preceded him in death, having passed away in 1934.
"He is survived also by 17 grandchildren and by one great-grandchild.
"During his years of residence in Framnas township, Mr. Grote was prominent and helpful in community activities --- as a member of the township board for a number of years and as treasurer in school district 14 for some years. He was a thoughtful and generous neighbor, friend and citizen and had a host of friends throughout the community."
