Andrew S. White Dies; Brother Was Governor
Andrew S. White of Fairfield Farms, Fayetteville, brother of the late Gov. Horace White and nephew of Andrew D. White, first president of Cornell University, died unexpectedly last night in University Hospital.
Mr. White, born in New York city Feb. 7, 1867, was a graduate of Cornell, class of '88, and received his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1893. Admitted to the bar in 1894, he began his legal profession with a partner under the firm name of White & Ryan and was associated with the firm 16 years before practicing independently.
During World War I, Mr. White served as a draft board member and participated in all the home front movements of the war period.
Mr. White was married to the former Anna L. Belden 1895. She died May 11, 1916. At the time of his death, Mr. White was the husband of Mrs. Claire Howard White, known professionally as Claire Alcee, widely known lyric soprano.
Mr. White was a brother of Horace White, a native of Homer, who became prominent in Syracuse business circles before entering the political field and becoming governor of the state. Gov. White served as lieutenant-governor under Gov. Charles Evans Hughes and filled the top post upon Hughes' resignation on Oct. 6, 1910.
Gov. White became president of The Post-Standard Co. in 1942 and for many years served as a director.
Mr. White, a member of the prominent legal and business family, has traveled extensively in recent years with Mrs. White. They wintered at The Breakers, Palm Beach.
Fairfield Farms was decorated with more than 20 moose and caribou heads which Mr. White shot or had collected during his travels. One of the highlights of his hunting career was the presentation of a trophy at Wembley Park, near London, England, handed him by the Marquis of Lorne.
Mr. White was a member of the Onondaga, DeWitt, and Palm Beach Skeet Clubs and at one time was a member of the Back Bay Club, Currituck Sound, N. C., of which former President Grover Cleveland once was a member.
