Neil D. Heily, a leading criminal trial lawyer of Ventura County died early this morning at UCLA Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Heily, 54, a 24-year resident of Oxnard, was born in Columbus, Mont., where he practice law before serving in the Pacific in World War II.

Heily never fully recovered from a major operation several years ago, which caused him to be hospitalized several times since. He re-entered the UCLA facility several weeks ago as his health worsened.

Following the war, Heily came to Oxnard where he joined the law firm of Charles Blackstock and William Reppy. The day he was accepted by the State Bar of California, Blackstock was appointed to the Ventura Superior Court bench. Heily worked as a law partner with Reppy before opening his own practice.

A member of the executive committee of the Ventura County Bar, Heily was on the board of governors of the California Trail Lawyers Association and was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court at Washington D.C.

Heily was a leader in raising funds for both the USO and Knights of Columbus buildings in Oxnard. He was a member of the Santa Clara Catholic Church, Oxnard Rotary Club, Oxnard Elks Lodge and the Oxnard Knights of Columbus.

Always regarded as "fighter" in the courtroom, he was in partnership with DeWitt Blase and David Ellison at the time of his death.

Surviving are his wife, Betty, of the family home at 624 Beverly Drive; a son, Patrick, of Reseda; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald Orrantia, of El Paso, Tex.; his mother, Mrs. Clara Heily and brother, Robert, both of Oxnard, and one granddaughter.

Funeral services are pending at Conrad and Comer Mortuary.

Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday, at Santa Clara Catholic Church, 323 E. St., Oxnard. Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m., Friday, by Msgr. Harold Laubacher at Santa Clara Church. Interment will following Santa Clara Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary this evening and until 5 p.m. Thursday.

COLUMBUS -- Neil D. Heily, former Columbus resident, died recently at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles of complications resulting from a kidney infection.

He attended Columbus schools and the University of Minnesota, and received his law degree from the University of Montana in 1938. He practice law in the office of E. K. Cheadle in Shelby before returning to Columbus, where he was county attorney until resigning to enter the Navy as a lieutenant in 1942. He was a gunnery officer in the Pacific area.

Mr. Heily married Betty Cassidy [sic, Cassady] at Tucson, Ariz., Jan. 24, 1941.

After the war he opened a law office at Oxnard, Calif., where he practiced until his death. He was senior partner in the law firm of Heily and Blase of Oxnard and president of the Trial Lawyers Association of California.

Besides the widow, he is survived by a son, Patrick, of Oxnard; a daughter, Mrs. Kathie Orrantia of El Paso, Texas; his mother, Mrs. Clara Mae Heily, and a brother, Robert, both of Oxnard; and a granddaughter.
