Matt H. Dobson, Wholesaler Here Dies Out West
Head of Dobson-Cannon Co. Succumbs on Visit to California.
News of the unexpected death of Matt Hughes Dobson, prominent wholesale grocer in Nashville for many years and one of the outstanding civic and social leaders in the community, was received by the family here from Los Angeles, California, Wednesday afternoon.

His death was the result of a heart attack suffered early Wednesday afternoon, according to information received in Nashville late Wednesday night from his wife and son, Howard Dobson, with whom he had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Harrison Armistead, in Los Angeles for the last few months.

Mr. Dobson was president of the Dobson-Cannon Company, wholesale grocers, and Dobson-Hicks, dealers in seed.
His death was a shock to his many friends and business associates. He was a member of the McKendree Methodist church and was a steward in the church for many years.

Mr. Dobson was born at Flat Creek, near College Grove, Tenn. March 26, 1856. He attended the schools of that place and came to Nashville when he was 17 years old and started to work as a clerk in one of the large department stores of the city.

Entered Grocery Business.
He later entered the grocery business and opened a wholesale store under the name of Dobson & Company, which was located on Second avenue for many years and was known throughout the state, many of the buyers in the small towns coming to Nashville to buy their stock.

This company he operated for many years and them became associated with Cannon Company, wholesale grocers, to form the firm Dobson-Cannon Company. Later he became associated with E.D. Hicks in the organization of the firm Dobson-Hicks Company, dealing in seeds. AT the time of his death he was president of both business institutions.

Mr Dobson married Miss Roberta Allen of Nashville, and in addition to this wife he is survived by the following children" Allen Dobson, secretary of Dobson-Cannon Company; Matt Hughes Dobson, Jr., Howard Dobson, sons and Mrs. Harrison Armistead, of Los Angeles, California. Another daughter, Mrs. Walter Hyde died in 1919.

Widely known for his association with the McKendree Methodist church, Mr. Dobson was a very devout church worker.

Historic Family
A member of a family prominent in the annals of Southern history, Mr. Dobson was the grandson of William Dobson of North Carolina, a prominent statesman and intimate friend of General Andrew Jackson. His father was also well known as a Southern patriot. His mother was formerly Miss Litia Hughes and Mr. Dobson was one of a family of eight children.

Mr. Dobson's first store was a retail grocery establishment on Broad street, which he operated with Charles Hopkins as Dobson-Hopkins Company and Later M.H. Dobson and Brothers.

Mr. Dobson had business interests in the west and conducted a number of general stores in Texas and California. In addition to his sons and daughter, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Clayton of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. J.W. Haynes of Sherman, Tenn., and a brother, R.L. Dobson of Nasvhille, and three grandchildren, Miss Martha Dobson, Matt Dobson III, and Ezzell Dobson. Funeral services and burial will be in Nashville.
