The Bowlin family moved to California when Vernon was about 10. He attended school in Los Angeles. Later Vernon worked at the L.A. produce market at Bowlin & Sons, then in aerospace, and as a milk man, before moving to the South Bay. Vernon lived in Redondo Beach and Torrance and owned two restaurants. Vernon and Dorothy Helsley were married in 1936 and raised two daughters, Nancy and Rosalie. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Staff Sgt. In 1965 he moved to Tulsa OK and returned to California 20 years later. He enjoyed living at the Salton Sea until health issues brought him back to the harbor area in 2001.
Vernon was predeceased by Dorothy, his brother, Cecil, and his second wife, Shirley. He is survived by daughter Nancy Fisher (Bill) and Rosalie Bowlin; grandchildren Kathi Burkhalter (David), Kristi Compton, Dale Penton (Mel), Randy Fisher (Elizabeth), David Montgomery, and Kerryn Morgan (Lloyd); and 10 great-grandchildren Shannynne, Mark and Jordan Burkhalter, Taylor Penton, Kelly, Kasey and Kammy Fisher, Shelby, Kaitlin and Tristin Morgan.
Family services will be held at Rolling Hills Covenant Church August 30, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. His ashes will be interred at the National Cemetery in Riverside.
