Mary Lincoln Melvin was born in Springfield, Illinois, where her father was a great friend and supporter of Abraham Lincoln, a frequent visitor at the Melvin home. After Mary was born, Mr. Lincoln visited in the months before he moved to Washington, D.C., and held her on his knee. Years later, it became a Dewing tradition that each new baby was held, and sometimes rocked, by Mary Lincoln Melvin Dewing.

They could claim that they sat on the knee of someone who sat on Lincoln's knee.

Years after her death, the tradition continues. Now, however, generations must be added: Sat on the knee of someone who sat on the knee of someone who sat on the knee of someone who sat on Lincoln's knee...or more. Knees have been subjects of "show and tell" and even a "ride" at a grade school fair.
