Editor, Publisher and Author. Beginning in 1928, Beuve-Mery worked at the Institu Francais in Prague. At the same time, for the newspaper "Le Temps", he served as a diplomatic correspondence until 1938. During World War II, he worked with the Resistance. In 1944, the French President, Charles de Gaulle requested Beuve-Mery to start a national free press to replace "Le Temps" that had been closed down. In response, he created "Le Monde" Although serving as publisher and editor, he would also contribute columns under the pen name "Sirius." Under his guidance, the paper gained a respected, international reputation. He also wrote a number of books, among these were: "Le Suicide de la IV Republique," and "Onze and de regne: 1958 to 1969." He retired in 1969 but kept an office at the paper. The International Press Institute named him a World Press Freedom Hero in 2000.
