John L. Colter, 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Colter of Etlah, MO, drowned Sunday April 29 when the boat in which he and three companions were riding swamped in Berger Creek near the Etlah bridge. His body was recovered approximately forty-five minutes after the accident and respiration by the New Haven Volunteer Fire Department Rescusitator proved unsuccessful due to the length of time he had been under water.
The boat in which John Colter, Harold Pehle, Oman Yaunt and Bud Colter were riding swamped and all the youths tried to reach shore; all but John, who could not swim, succeeded in reaching the bank. Oman Yaunt noticed John floundering in the water and attempted to rescue him. Yaunt however, was pulled under by the Colter boy and finally broke free and made his way to shore. Help was summoned in an effort to recover the body. Nets and grappling hooks were used and the body was recovered in approximately 8 feet of water about ten feet from the creek bank. The boy was pronounced dead a short time later.
The boat, which was swamped, did not sink and after it was abandoned by the occupants floated up stream due to back water.
John Louis Colter was born at Etlah, on January 17, 1931 and reached the age of 20 years, 3 months and 12 days at the time of his sudden death. He had resided the largest part of his lifetime in the Etlah home with his parents. He was employed at the Harris Langenberg Hat Company in New Haven, he was well known in this community.
Those mourning his departure are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Colter of Etlah; 3 sisters, Mrs. Pierre Quebedaux of Louisiana, Mrs. Joseph Deaton of Arizona, Mrs. Edward Queenan of Louisiana; 6 brothers, Gordon Colter of Valley Park, MO, Leonard Colter of St. Louis; PFC Marvin Colter of Elgin Air Force Base, FL, Eugene, Leroy and Cecil of Etlah and a host of other near relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, Berger, MO, on Thursday, May 3. Interment will be in the Etlah Cemetery.
