The following is the rebuttal to those online erroneous trees: The Erie County, NY 1855 census, which has been cited by these trees, has a household with Charles W Barr, cooper, age 45, born in 1810 in Chenango County; wife Almira nee Blindberry, age 45, born Dutchess County; and son George W Barr, age 22, born 1833 in Chenango County, a medical student. The family group is in Erie County, NY from 1850-1880 with George appearing in Titusville, PA in 1880 as a physician/surgeon. For information on this family group, see: Physicians and Surgeons of America, by Irving A Watson, Concord, NH, 1896, page 445. https://archive.org/details/PhysiciansAndSurgeonsOfAmericaNLM56510380R/page/n4/mode/2up

The following biography was researched and written by me and can all be verified.

The subject of this memorial, Charles Barr, was born in 1804 in NJ, and was a wagon maker/painter in Youngstown, OH from 1840-1883. He first married Almira Woodworth, about 1828, and had 4 sons. Almira was born in NY and died in Youngstown, OH in 1844. Of their 4 sons, the first died young, George W, born in Youngstown, OH, became a molder in Cincinnati, OH; William M moved to TN and started as a sign painter and became a pharmacist/druggist in Jackson, TN after the Civil War; and James A was a wagon and sign painter in Nebraska City, NE. These 3 sons appear with Charles on the 1850 census and can then be found in their respective states of residence from 1860 onward. Charles Barr married second, Jane Carlisle, no issue, and third, Julila nee Pauley, with whom he had Eliza and Ella. These are his only wives and his only children. My research has been done using census data, Civil War information, newspapers, city directories, cemetery data, birth, death and marriage records.

Charles can be found in 1830 in Salem (now Conneaut), Ashtabula, Ohio and in Youngstown, Ohio on the 1840-1880 censuses. He and Almira have one more son, Charles Henry, b. before 1830 in Salem, who dies young. After Almira dies, he marries second, Jane O Carlisle who has a child, Mary E Geyer. Mary Geyer (Mary E Barr Hoover) takes the surname of "Barr" and her mother dies in 1865 of cancer of the face. She marries Peter Hoover in 1861. In 1866 Charles marries for the third time, Julila Pauley. Children from the third marriage are Eliza and Ella. He appears in the Youngstown city directory up through 1883/84, so he appears to have left Youngstown between 1882 and 1883. Then he appears in the 1885 Nebraska State Census living with his son, James A Barr and family in Nebraska City, NE. He is buried 16 Feb 1894 and the plot is owned by James A. Barr. http://negenweb.net/NEOtoe/wyuka/index.htm

From his obituaries, he states that he was part of the convention that first nominated Garfield. This would probably have been the Ohio Republican Convention of 1862 held in Garrettsville, OH. It was at this convention that Garfield was first nominated to run for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ella Barr Cox Varner Lambert was born in Youngstown, OH to Charles and Julila Pauley. Ella had two children, Roy H Cox, and Blanche Varner. Blanche was raised by Charles Lambert, Ella's third husband. Ella died 24 Jan 1949, in Seattle, WA.

Roy H Cox grandson of Charles.
