John D HENRY from Locust Cottage, Talladega township, Jefferson county, Arkansas, s/o Capt Phillip George and Martha Permelie (Timmons) HENRY passed away early April 1876, boarding with the John Decatur HENRY family of Fayetteville. He was attending the five year old, Arkansas Industrial University (now University of Arkansas), a student of Colonel Oliver Crosby GRAY, see below:
Colonel GRAY's compassion and leadership towards his students has been documented many times, in many ways. For one; --- he's found in 1876 (nation's centennial year, state's 40th anniversary) John D. Henry Letters, of Manuscript Collection MC 49 of University of Arkansas' Special Collections had first INCORRECTLY listed as, Dr. O.C. Gray, "... John's physician ..." author of letter #5. (since notified, file was corrected)
There was a Dr. C.S. Gray, a fellow mason, who is noted in letter #4, who had cared for the boy at cost of $24. However, --- it WAS Colonel O.C. GRAY who wrote his compassionate, April 4th 1876 letter to parents, Capt P. G. & Martha P. Henry of Locust Cottage, Jefferson county, Arkansas, (who had about 1872, helped build school near Locust Cottage's post office) regarding April 1876 death of their son, John D. Henry.
Letter #4, to the parents, was from John Decatur and wife Lucy A HENRY, whose son boarded with them in Fayetteville and parents of a son who died less than two years later, stating at end of his portion of letter the following, to wit:
"He was buried on my lot in Evergreen Cemetery, this Cemetery belongs to the Masons & Odd Fellows. I have charge of it. It is situated just west of town and immediately between my house and the College and in sight of both. There is 4 acres in it in 4 Sections with 36 lots in each Section with a street each way through the center and alley between Each lot. The Lot is 20 ft square. My Lot is in Section One, Lot 14. John is buried in the northeast corner of my lot." Just described is northeast four acres of Historic Evergreen cemetery as we know it in 2012!
