Sam was the son of Frank and Bessie (Goodman) Gindy. He spent his early years in the Toledo area, working first as a shoe salesman, then as a men's clothing salesman. He would spend the majority of his life working in sales. In 1927 he married Margaret Martin, and they had two children, a son and daughter. The marriage ended in divorce in 1940, and Sam never remarried. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant in a short period of time. He received an honorable discharge in 1943, after his ex wife passed away leaving his children without a parent. After leaving the military he resided in Detroit, Michigan for awhile, eventually settling in southern California, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Sam spent his later years collecting coins now and then, watching golf on TV and visiting with his daughter and son-in-law on Sundays. He also enjoyed taking trips to Las Vegas every few months. He lost his battle with cancer at the age of 74.
