James married first Peggy Woods. He married second Elizabeth Billingsley about 1795.

The following was taken from a DAR application:

At the age of 16, James Hopkins entered the service as a private soldier in June 1781 in the town of Hillsborough, Orange Co., North Carolina. He entered the service under the following named officers: Col. Thomas Farmer, Major Humphreys, and Captain Parish.
He was engaged in the Battle of the Eutaw Springs in the state of South Carolina under the command of General Green. The battle was fought on the 9th of September, 1781.
He marched from the town of Hillsborough to the town of Salisbury, Rowan Co., North Carolina; from thence to Thompson's Fort on the Congaree River; from thence to the Eutaw Springs, South Carolina where the battle was fought.
He served under General Green for 3 months.
