Mr. Hopkins, was born at Centralia, Ill., August 1, 1845. He has been a resident of this state for nearly half a century and until the last few years has engaged in farming. He enlisted at the age of 16 years the latter part of October 1863 as a private with Company B. 111th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, later being transferred to Company D of the 48th Regiment. He was mustered out of service at Little Rock, Ark., August 8, 1865 with an honorable discharge.
He was well known and liked by all who knew him, this fact being established by the large crowd who attended the funeral services. He was spry for one of his advanced years.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Mrs. Nancy Hopkins, five children, Frankie Hopkins of Esther, Mo., Jess Hopkins of Manila, Ark., Arthur Hopkins of Riverdale, Ark., Jim Hopkins of Manila, Ark., and Mrs. Madge Thompson of Hartzell, Mo.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 from the Baptist church at Pascola, he being a member of that church, the services being conducted by E.L. Dycus, in the presence of a large crowd which filled the church to overflowing.
He was buried with military honors, Capt. J.V. Moore, with his firing squad of Company C of Hayti, Mo., firing the salute with a bugler boy from the same company blowing taps.
