Lelan Black was born in Deseret, Utah and moved to southern Idaho as a young child, where his family homesteaded and farmed. He was raised in Eden, Idaho, attended the University of Utah, and later joined his father in the Black Produce Company, which he ran for many years.

He married Rheta Lowe in 1933, and they lived in Twin Falls for 30 plus years, raising three children. In 1960, he relocated his business to the Pocatello area, where he remained active in produce sales until his retirement in 1985.

After his wife's death in 1991, he moved to San Diego, Calif. He died at the age of 91, after a long period of deteriorating health.

He is survived by a daughter, Lorita Whitehead of British Columbia, a son, Dr. Paul Black of San Diego, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at the White Mortuary in Twin Falls on June 4, at 2pm, followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Park. Published in U-T San Diego on May 26, 2004
