|This is the location (Beyers Run Canyon)where Sgt.Thomas Boyne was cited for bravery in action and awarded the Medal Of Honor.Back then it was called Mimbres Mountains.Pvt.Frank Dorcey was killed and possibly buried there.|
On the 29th May 1879,Co.C,9th U.S.Cavalry,under command of Captain Beyers, out of Ft.Bayard,New Mexico, either attacked or was attacked by the Apache chief Victorio and his warriors as they rode down this canyon.Several men were killed or wounded on both sides. After the battle Co.C returned and carved several crosses in the tall Yellow Pines,of which only one remains at the site.Another is in a museum in Chloride.Information is hard to find on this. There is no permanent or official marker recognizing this site. The tree is weak, leaning, and rocks in the ground.I live close by and make sure it doesn't tip over, rot, and be lost.
If any one has knowledge of the history of this battle, records of the 9th,I would appreciate learning from it.
