U.S. Congressman. After he graduated from Transylvania Law School, in 1830, he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Mount Carmel, Illinois. During the Black Hawk War, he was quartermaster in 1832, Colonel in the Wabash County Militia, in 1833, attorney for the Wabash circuit, in 1835 and a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, (1835, 38, 42). In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth, Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth Congresses, serving until 1849 and elected to the Thirty-second Congress, serving (1851-53). He then resumed the practice of law, was a delegate to the Illinois State constitutional convention, (1869-70) and again served in the Illinois State House of Representatives, in 1878.
