US Congressman. He was born in Dover, New Hampshire, attended local schools and completed his preparatory studies, before attending college at the distinguished Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, and later studying at Bowdoin College in Bowden, Maine, where he graduated from in 1835. After graduating from college, he moved to Dover, New Hampshire, where he studied law and was eventually admitted to the bar. He moved to Marshall, Illinois, in 1838 and began studying law for the next ten years. In 1848, he decided to enter politics. A Democrat, he served Illinois's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives from 1849 to 1851. While in the United States Congress, he served on the House Committee on Public Lands. He did not seek reelection for another term after his time in office was over. In 1852, he married Margarette E. Jones and the two had three children. He also served as a Delegate to the Illinois State Constitutional Convention from Clark County, Illinois, in 1862. After his time in politics, he relocated to Mattoon, Illinois, where he became a successful manufacturer of plug tobacco for ten years. He lastly moved to Clark County, Illinois, where he furthered his business interests in the railroad and agricultural pursuits. He passed away in Oilfield, near Casey, Illinois, at the age of 86.
