MRS. J. W. ATHEY
Mrs. J. W. Athey died at her home in this city last Friday, April 15th, after an acute illness of six weeks. The cause of her death was Bright's disease, from which she had suffered for years. The funeral services were held from the Christian church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and were conducted by Dr. O. L. Sample, pastor of the Methodist church, Rev. Ball of the Christian church being unable to officiate on account of illness. Interment was in the Larned cemetery.
Miss Lodema Bonham was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, July 1, 1847, and was aged 73 years, 9 months and 14 days at the time of her death.
She was married to James W. Athey in Coshocton county, Ohio, January 16, 1868. To this union were born four children, three of whom, together with her husband and one grandson, are left to mourn her death. On son, Sanford Evan, died in 1888. The other children are: Mrs. Allie A. Kerr and Mrs. Lizzie Estella Murphy of Oklahoma City, and Thomas Franklin Athey of Washington, D. C.
Mr. and Mrs. Athey came to Pawnee county in 1878, and settled on a farm south of Larned, and remained there until 1910, when they moved to Larned, which has been their home since.
Mrs. Athey had been in failing health for a number of years, but some six weeks ago she became worse. All that loving hands could do was done, but these could not stay the hand of death, and surrounded by her loved ones she enterered upon her rest.
Mrs. Athey united with the Christian church when but a girl in Ohio, and had been a devout member of the church for over fifty years. She held a membership in the W. C. T. U. and a life membership in the C.W. B. M., and was a loyal and faithful member of the church and the W. C. T. U. She was deeply interested in all the work of the church, and in the movements that had to do with the welfare of the community.
She was devoted to her home and family, a loving wife and a devoted mother. She will be greatly missed by her immediate household and a host of sorrowing friends.
