U.S. Congressman. He moved with his parents to California, 1853 and settled in Humboldt County. He became a printer, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced to practice in Eureka, California. He was District Attorney of Humboldt County, (1867-69), a California State Representative, (1869-71) and a California State Senator, (1871-75). Returned to private law practice in 1875, he was Eureka City Attorney, (1878-80) and a California Superior Court Judge, (1884-89). In 1889, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress, serving until he resigned in 1890, to be an Associate Justice, California Supreme Court, serving (1891-95). President William McKinley appointed DeHaven a US Federal Judge in 1897 and he served until his death at age 63.
