Son of Dr.James B.and Delia Patterson McCaw.After attending private schools in Richmond,he was graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1882.Two years later he graduated from the College of Phyysicians and Surgeons,Columbia University,New York,whereupon he joined the United States Army Medical Corps.
He was appointed assistant surgeon-general March 5,1919,after serving a year as chief surgeon of the American Expeditionary Forces.
General McCaw was in the campaign of San Tiago de Cuba in 1898 and in the Philippine Islands during the insurrection.
In 1932 he was awarded the Silver Star Medal,was a commander of the Legion of Honor(French,Companion of the Bath(British)and officer of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus(Italian).
