Sgt. Leonard W. Araujo, one of two sons of Mrs. Julia V. Rodriguez, of Hanford, killed in action, took part in the North African, Sicilian and Italian campaigns. He was wounded in Sicily, and was awarded the Purple Heart. Araujo entered the service in November, 1942, training in radio at Camp Campbell, Kentucky. Araujo was graduated from Hanford Union High School in 1941. Before enlisting in the Army he was the secretary of the Hanford Air Raid Warning Service.

His parents were Ben and Julia Araujo. One brother, Private Robert Pete Araujo, was killed April 20, 1945, in Germany. Another brother, PFC George V. Araujo, also served in World War II and fought on Okinawa.
