Claxton - Edith Roach Downs, 91, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton. Mrs. Downs was predeceased by her husband, Mr. Albert Christian "Kick" Downs. Mrs. Downs was a lifelong resident of Evans County. She was a member of the Claxton First United Methodist Church and the George Durrence Sunday School Class. She was a graduate of Georgia Teachers College and retired from the Evans County Elementary School system where she taught 4th grade for over 33 years. She served on the Administrative Board of the Claxton First United Methodist Church, the Evans County Board of Health, and the Georgia Retired Teachers Association where she received the Emeritus Award when she was 90.
Survivors: one son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Emily Downs of Claxton; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Carlton House of Claxton; one sister, Mary Lee Durrence of Claxton; three grandchildren, Kerry Christian House Fulton of Columbia, SC, Derrick Winship Downs of Savannah and Dorrie Downs Whitehead of Daisy; one great-grandchild, Gabrielle Christian Fulton of Columbia, SC; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: 6:00 p. m. until, Thursday, Jan. 30, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton. Funeral Services: 11:00 a. m. Friday, Jan. 31, at the Claxton First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Craig Hutto and Dr. Tab Smith officiating. Burial: Brewton Cemetery.
