Mary passed away at Harrison House, Christiana, Pa. She was a long time member of Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church in Christiana, and the Church's Womens' Circle.
She was a homemaker. Mary was one of the last living members of Brandywine Manor School, West Brandywine Twp. and a charter member of the American Legion Auxillary, Benner Shoff Post 865 of Christiana.
Memories of my Grandmother, Mary
Mary was named for her Grandmothers, Mary Wilson Bonsall and Emma Phoebe Cain White. She was the oldest of five Children, baby Brother, Edward Chester, having passed away in 1905. Mary was almost 15 yrs. old when her Mother, Martha, died. Mary helped to care for her younger Siblings, Alice, Walter, and Thomas. She prepared farm items for her Father, Edward, to take to Market, and earned extra money by taking in laundry and cleaning houses. Mary wanted to attend a school in West Chester, Pa., to become a nurse, but her Father, Edward, would not permit it. At age 17 yrs., Mary worked at a store, in Coatesville,Pa., earning five dollars a week. At night, Mary roomed with Sister, Alice, who also worked in Coatesville, Pa. at a restaurant. Mary paid for her room and board, by peeling potatoes for the owners of the restaurant. In 1913, Mary got diptheria, a contagious, bacterial, upper respiratory infection. Her symptoms were high fever and sore throat. She was treated with onion poultice, and told to lie flat, unless she wanted to die. Relatives of her deceased Mother, Martha, cared for her. At about age 19/20 yrs., Mary worked in a silk mill, in Christiana,Pa., earning six dollars a week and she boarded with an Uncle and Aunt, Jacob and Hannah Mary Bonsall Glick. Mary met handsome, William Hamilton Borland, at the home of her Aunt and Uncle, Hannah and Jacob. William was a Widower, with two young Daughters, Dorothy and Hilda. During this time Mary was working for her Aunt and Uncle, as well as babysitting for a wealthy family. Mary and William dated once a month. Mary was almost 23 yrs. old when she married William, or Will, as she was known to call him. They were married in 1918, in Lancaster,Pa. at the home of Methodist minister, Rev. J. L. Gensemer. After marrying, the couple went to the movies. Mary was a Step-Mother and Homemaker, while William worked for the Christiana (Pa.) Machine Co. Sadly, Step-Daughter, Dorothy Borland, died in 1918, of typhoid fever. She was about 13 yrs. old. Soon, Mary and William added to their Family with seven more children. Mary provided food for her Family, by dressing chickens, that she raised, along with garden produce, and sour cherries and pears from her backyard. Her sour cherry pudding and baked macaroni and cheese were delicious!! Mary was a thoughtful and kind lady, and enjoyed writing letters and sending cards to people, no matter the occasion. In later yrs., Mary enjoyed bus trips, and even flying by plane to visit Family, but she really did not like escalators at the airports!! THE LORD blessed Mary with a 101 yrs. on this earth, but she is very much missed!!
