US Congressman. Born in Hindman, Kentucky, he graduated from the University of Louisville Law School in 1935, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Hindman, Kentucky. He served a term as commonwealth attorney from the thirty-first judicial district in 1939, was a member of Kentucky General Assembly in 1940 and was elected Knott County Attorney in 1941. During World War II, he served in the US Army in Europe. After the war, he was reelected Knott County Attorney in 1945 and was counsel for Department of Highways, Frankfort, Kentucky. In 1949, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first Congress, reelected to the next seventeen succeeding Congresses, serving until death at age 71. He died of a heart attack while on board a flight from Washington, D.C., to Lexington, Kentucky.
