Emanuel was the son of Nicholas and Henrietta Warthan.
Emanuel died while a member of Company G from the Minnesota 3rd Infantry while enroute to Pine Bluff, AR in 1864 of maleria during the Civil War.

Emanuel died at the home of his parents in Chickasaw County, Iowa of Chronic diarrhea which he contracted while serving in the Civil War in Arkansas
